"Whatever career you may choose for yourself- doctor, lawyer, teacher- let me propose an avocation to be pursued along with it.
Become a dedicated fighter for civil rights. Make it a central part of your life.
It will make you a better doctor, a better lawyer, a better teacher. It will enrich your spirit as nothing else possibly can. It will give you that rare sense of nobility that can only spring from love and selflessly helping your fellow man.
Make a career of humanity.Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights.
You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in." -MLK J.R

People always want to define you by what you do.  I started saying, "I"m not too concerned with what I am going to do.  I am more interested in who I am becoming.  I want to be a lover of God and people."

I was convinced that what we do is not nearly as important as who we are.  The question is not whether you will be a doctor or a lawyer but what kind of doctor or lawyer you will be.  What would a twenty-year-old Jesus have said if they asked him, "What are you going to do when you grow up?"  I don't know, maybe something like, "I'm going to turn the world upside-down.  I'm going to hang out with prostitutes and tax collectors until people kill me."  Or what would Peter have said?  "Well, I was going to be a fisherman, but then I met this dude, and he messed all that up."

I remembered Mother Teresa saying, "Do not worry about your career.  Concern yourself with your vocation, and that is to be lovers of Jesus."

you look beautiful & sure.  but your vision is far more beautiful & i'm drawn to it.  i wish i could have been there with you, as you lobbied for the voiceless.  i want to know you better.  (do you have facebook?)  i'm muddled as i beg for purpose & direction in my life, just having glimpses of the vocation i'm called to, but so confused as to the doing i must begin to reach for that...

love & prayers,

lizzy
